Dave Canales still hasn’t made a decision on the Panthers’ starting QB this week.

Uncertainty was the name of the game for Carolina Panthers 2020s. Who trains? Who’s calling? What did they do? Who did they trade? The latest uncertainty centers around the most important position on the field. Defender.

Following Bryce Young career-defining performance against the New Orleans Saints, who both ended the Panthers’ five-game losing streak and revived the former No. 1 overall pick’s value, the decision to give him another chance as a starter seems obvious. Young’s time on the bench served him well. The sophomore signal-caller looked calm, in control and in contrast to the jitterbug quarterback who failed to throw down passes during the first two weeks of the season, and he deserves a chance to build on those improvements. Dave Canales isn’t so sure.

In today’s press release, the Panthers head coach was asked about his team’s starting quarterback for Week 10 in Germany. Those in attendance and watching at home expected to hear the rookie head coach crown Young as the team’s starter, but Canales was unable to do so.

His inability to name a starter is baffling at this point. Canales admitted that skill plays a role in his hesitation, but to me the answer is clear. Bryce Young deserves to start.

The Panthers benched Young because he was completely unable to carry Canales’ offense with even modest success for two weeks. For a staff that needed to evaluate the talent on the roster and the veterans who deserved a chance to win, Dalton was the guy. It was the right decision at that time. However, after six weeks of watching Dalton from the bench, Young appears ready to lead the Panthers in both the immediate and long-term (the remainder of the season) future. His skills and confidence have improved significantly during his time off, and Young can now manage Canales’ scheme at a level that allows the team to compete. Canales and company’s path is simple: Let Young do the cooking.
