Official Anime Girl of the Catholic Church Already Participating in Power Level Memes

Last week, the Vatican unveiled the official mascot for the 2025 Jubilee of the Catholic Church: anime girl named Lucy. The anniversary’s chief organizer, Archbishop Rino Fisichella, hopes the chibi Bible-beating mascot will help the church penetrate the anime community and spread the good word to children who love the genre.

Unbeknownst to Fisichella, the Catholic Church has created a biblically accurate anime character to help the community soar to the top of the power rankings against the medium’s most powerful warriors.

Luce (pronounced “loo-chay”) was created by Italian tokidoki creator Simone Legno. Like her namesake (Italian for “light”), Lucy is a small blue-haired girl with bright, piercing eyes; she is wearing a yellow cloak and dirty galoshes, and is holding a staff. Most importantly, Lucy wears her Jesus jewelry around her neck to let people know that she is faithful to Christ.

Like any self-respecting anime character, she is accompanied by a diverse group of friends who likely have their own set of visual motifs related to the virtues of Catholicism. However, they are not Lucy. People on the Internet began to portray her as the power of God. and animedominating the medium like a holy warrior.

Be it on X/Twitter or TikTokAnime fans around the world have been hard at work creating memes and fan art of Lucy portraying the holy child – meant to symbolize weathering the storms that life throws at God’s children – as a storm to be reckoned with. In the short period that Lucy existed in the anime zeitgeist, she quickly became one of the most powerful anime characters of all time. It turns out it’s not mud on her shoes; this is the blood of her opponents after she the tri-beam blasts them and absolves them of their sins.

In honor of anime’s new, benevolent overlord, here’s a quick list of some of our favorite Lucy posts.

It’s hard to argue with the unholy alchemy of the Vatican concocting its anime girl Lucy as catnip to the anime community, spreading a pin-sized image of her as an artistic template across the web like bread and fish. However, it is too early to tell whether the Catholic Church’s efforts to reach out to an even wider network of people will lead to a new generation of believers who will point to it as their entry point to salvation, as many anime fans have done before. Goku from Dragon Ball Z. Seeing how blue-haired girls have the worst luck in animeshe has a long way to go before she can stand shoulder to shoulder with such titans as VeggieTales.

Update at 5:40 pm ET: This article has been updated to clarify that Lucy is not a man-made mascot, but simply an original Vatican design. We regret the error.
