Republican Mark Catlin leads Democrat Cole Burger in the election. elections represent Senate District 5 after 7:50 pm on Tuesday.

Nearly 64,000 votes have been counted, with voting data reported in six of the county’s seven counties so far. Kathleen currently leads in Montrose and Delta counties.

The race includes Burger, a business owner from Glenwood Springs, and Kathleen, a state representative from Montrose.



Senate District 5 stretches from the Interstate 70 corridor in Garfield County through the Roaring Fork Valley into Hinsdale County, near the state’s southern border. It includes all of Pitkin, Gunnison and Hinsdale counties, as well as parts of Delta, Montrose, Garfield and Eagle counties.

The district is currently represented by Senator Perry Will, a Republican from New Castle, who decided do not stand for re-election.

Depending on the results of several other elections, the Senate District 5 race could determine whether Democrats gain supermajority in the General Assembly. With a two-thirds majority in the House and Senate, Democrats could make progress in fundamentally changing the Colorado Constitution. including state taxelections and criminal justice systems.

They would also be able to override any vetoes by Gov. Jared Polis, reducing one of his key bargaining chips. Polis is a Democrat, but he rejects the most progressive policies of some state legislators.
