Met Police are investigating but no arrests have yet been made.

The victim’s injuries are considered “not life-threatening or life-altering.”

An Asda spokesman told the East London Advertiser: “We are in contact with our colleague and are providing ongoing support.

“Our thoughts are with him, as well as all the colleagues and customers who witnessed this incident.

“Next week marks Shop Worker Respect Week and this incident further highlights the urgent need for greater protection for retail workers.

“We continue to advocate for acts of violence or abuse against retail workers to be made a separate criminal offence. No colleague should come to work fearing attack.”

After the attack, the supermarket was quarantined
