After former President Donald Trump won election to a second term in the White House, many online wondered, “Could Trump run for president in 2028?”

Since the US Constitution was originally written, its framers did not establish any rules regarding term limits.

In fact, one president has been elected to a third term in US history. President Franklin D. Roosevelt was elected to a third term in 1940 and then a fourth term in 1944.

What did the US Constitution originally say about presidential term limits?

The US Constitution, as it was originally written, did not provide any limits on the term of office of the president.

It sets citizenship and age requirements, but not term limits.

“No person, other than a natural-born citizen or a citizen of the United States, shall, at the adoption of this Constitution, be qualified to the office of President; nor shall any person be eligible for this office who has not attained to the age of thirty-five years and been a resident of the United States for fourteen years.” Article II, Section I states:.

But the law on term limits would change in 1951, when the 22nd Amendment was ratified.

What is the 22nd Amendment to the Constitution and what does it say about term limits?

The Twenty-Second Amendment to the US Constitution limits the president’s term to two terms.

The 22nd Amendment states:: “No person shall be elected to the office of President more than twice, and no person who has held the office of President or acted as President more than two years from the term for which any other person was elected President shall be elected to the post of President more than once.”

Can Donald Trump remain president for a third term?

According to the US Constitution and the 22nd Amendment, President-elect Trump cannot seek a third term in 2028, even though his two terms will not be consecutive.
