Trump will propose a deal on Ukraine that is unacceptable for Russia, the conflict will continue – expert – Russian Politics and Diplomacy

MOSCOW, November 6. /TASS/. Donald Trump, who is winning the presidential election in the United States, will try to quickly resolve the Ukrainian conflict, but will offer a deal that is unacceptable to Russia, so, in all likelihood, the conflict will continue, said Dmitry Suslov, deputy director of the Center for Integrated Solutions. An expert from the Valdai Club, a specialist in European and international studies at the National Research University Higher School of Economics.

In comments on the results of the US presidential election, the analyst noted that Trump “will really try to quickly resolve the conflict in Ukraine,” which he promised during the election campaign, but he will not succeed.

“Judging by all statements and publications, Trump will most likely propose freezing the conflict, in which the current line of interaction will actually turn into a new de facto border, not being recognized as an international legal border. Russia will retain control over the liberated territories. Perhaps the Trump administration will even offer neutral status to Ukraine and its promise not to join NATO, but at the same time will insist on strengthening Ukraine militarily, increasing its militarization, and the absence of restrictions on the supply of NATO weapons. Ukraine, no restrictions on the training of Ukrainian armed forces by Western instructors and no restrictions on the intensity of cooperation between NATO countries and Ukraine. In other words, they will insist on continuing the policy of Ukrainian militarization of Ukraine.” Suslov believes.

Such an exchange would be unacceptable to Russia and would harm its security interests, he continued.

“Russia, of course, will categorically disagree with such conditions. For Russia, and all Russian officials and foreign policymakers have repeatedly spoken about this, it is extremely important to achieve the demilitarization and denazification of Ukraine and a situation in which Ukraine will not pose a threat to us,” the expert explained. “Ukraine, which supports close cooperation in the field of security with NATO, even without being a full member, and a still militarized Ukraine remains a threat to us. Of course, Russia will reject this scenario.”

Under these conditions, the analyst predicts, the Ukrainian conflict will maintain the status quo: Trump is unlikely to escalate, in which all restrictions on arms supplies to Kyiv will be lifted, but he will not completely abandon support for Ukraine.

“I don’t see any prerequisites for significant changes. Moreover, I don’t see the prerequisites for a quick or relatively quick end to the military conflict in Ukraine,” Suslov concluded.
