One person killed, dog rescued from Nantucket fire

The cause of the fire is still under investigation.

One person died while rescuing a dog from a house fire Tuesday night in Nantucket.

According to release Nantucket Fire Chief Michael Cranson received a call from a resident at 6 Green Meadows Road reporting a fire inside the home.

Firefighters arrived on the scene at 7:30 p.m. and began searching for the home’s occupants while working to contain and extinguish the fire, the report said.

During the search, firefighters located the resident and removed him from the structure. First responders provided emergency medical treatment and transported the resident to Nantucket Cottage Hospital.

The resident did not survive, the report said.

Firefighters also found a dog in the house. They stabilized the dog at the scene and transported him to Marine Animal Hospital for further care.

The fire was extinguished. One firefighter suffered minor injuries and was treated for injuries.

The Fire Marshal’s Office, Massachusetts State Police, Nantucket Fire Department and Nantucket Police Department are investigating the cause of the fire.

The name of the deceased has not been disclosed.

“Our thoughts and condolences go out to the resident’s family and friends during this difficult time,” Cranson said in a statement. “We extend our gratitude to all first responders on Nantucket and the Massachusetts State Police for their professionalism and teamwork in handling this tragic incident.”
