Scalise calls for Trump criminal cases to be dropped ‘immediately’

House Majority Leader Steve Scalise (R-LA) calls for the immediate dismissal of criminal cases against President-elect Donald Trump, citing his victory over Vice President Kamala Harris on Tuesday.

“The American People Have Spoken: The Law Must End,” Scalise wrote in a post on X. “I call on Attorney General Garland, Alvin Bragg and Fanie Willis to immediately end the politically motivated prosecution of President Donald Trump.”

KEY DATES FOR PRESIDENTIAL CHANGE IN 2024

Scalise’s statement comes as Trump is involved in several criminal cases, one of which he is scheduled to sentence later this month.

Trump is scheduled to appear before New York Judge Juan Merchan on November 26 to be sentenced after he was found guilty of 34 counts of falsifying business records, shortly after Michael Cohen testified before a grand jury last year. , detailing his 2018 sentence when he pleaded guilty. guilty of paying two women who had accused Trump of sex to keep quiet, including porn star Stormy Daniels.

Trump denies any wrongdoing.

It is unclear whether Trump will receive a conviction in the case, especially after the Supreme Court ruled this summer that sitting presidents have some immunity from prosecution for official acts that fall within the “exclusive scope of their constitutional powers.”

Merchan could decide to vacate Trump’s conviction, meaning he will not be sentenced. If he decides to convict, Trump’s legal team will likely ask for a stay of sentencing to allow him to appeal the verdict.

Trump also faces other criminal charges, including two cases in Washington, D.C., and Georgia related to his actions during the Jan. 6 Capitol riot and attempts to overturn the results of the 2020 election. The president-elect’s legal strategy has been to delay the trials until he is inaugurated at the White House, at which point Trump can dismiss the cases himself.
