At 5:15 a.m., the Cicero Fire Department received a call about a heavy fire at a home near 29th Street and 51st Avenue.

Officials said the initial fire started in an abandoned home and spread to the Armas family’s home.

When crews arrived, they were able to rescue three people: a 14-year-old boy, his father and his grandmother, officials said.

However, the flames trapped the mother and her 16-year-old son in the attic. Both died in the fire, officials said.

They were identified as Aura Armas and Luis Armas Jr., city officials said.

Neighbors said they heard the family screaming for help early in the morning.

The family’s three dogs made it out safely.

Berwyn, Oak Park, Stickney, North Riverside, Forest Park and River Forest contributed their fire departments to help fight the fire.
