Councilman-elect Eric Cantu seeks change in District 3

CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas — Eric Cantu is ready to shake up District 3, bringing bold plans for safety, animal welfare and community change to Corpus Christi’s Westside.

KRIS 6 News local news reporter Naydi Escobar spoke with Cantu to find out what his plans are for the Westside.

Cantu leads the race against Alberto Carillo III with 70.13% (10,225 votes).

Cantu said the city’s West Side is often overlooked, something he hopes to change in the next two years.

“I feel like in District 3 the crime rate has gone down to zero, which is sad,” Cantu admitted.

Public safety is at the top of his list as he understands the crime rate on the West Side. He told KRIS 6 News that putting more officers on the streets will make the place safer and better for families and their community.

“We need to do better, we need to succeed. We need more officers on our streets, more EMTs, firefighters and paramedics to give our people the best possible response times,” he added.

He also said another important goal he will propose is making Corpus Christi a no-kill shelter. But to do all this, he knows he needs the help of the council members.

“There are so many innocent animals that are killed every day because they are not adopted or claimed, and I want to say that they have 14 days to be adopted or claimed, and after that they kill. ” – he said.

He touched on the importance of serving animals, but also wants to help those who need it – the homeless.

But how will he do all this?

“We need to look at the budget and match our wants with our needs, eliminate our wants and include all our needs,” he said.

Make this another priority on your list, ensuring that the right choice is made for the third district.
“I feel like District 3 has a lot of potential. I feel like there’s so much left behind and there’s a lot going on in different districts, but not in District 3,” he added.

Cantu also added that he plans to work closely with other city council members to ensure success.

“We have started work in District 3; District 3 is the heart of Corpus Christi, where working class people live,” he said.

Eric Cantu will be sworn in to the City Council in January 2025.
