The offseason has already passed several key dates and deadlines, some of which involved changes to the Seattle Mariners roster.

Mariners outfielder Mitch Haniger accepted his $17.5 million player option, and the club declined a $12 million option for second baseman Jorge Polanco.

Seattle made other roster moves, including optioning minor leaguer Blas Castano and removing Sam Haggerty, Matt Brush and Jackson Kovar from the 60-day injured list (as they were required to do by MLB rules).

But there was another major offseason milestone that had gone unnoticed until now: the general managers’ meetings.

The annual meetings, taking place this year in San Antonio, began Monday evening and continue through Thursday.

It’s usually during the offseason trades and signings that things really start to get going in general manager meetings. Everyone communicates face to face, and phone calls that “test” the availability of the player(s) can quickly turn into the early stages of a deal. This is also an opportunity for teams to lay the groundwork with agents.

And according to recent reports, the former Mariners prospect is a popular free agent target.

Former Seattle minor league pitcher Luis Curvelo is a popular free agent target in general manager meetings, according to MLB Network reporter Jon Morosi.

Curvelo was an international free agent signed in 2018 from Venezuela. Curvelo last pitched for the Mariners’ Double-A affiliate Arkansas Travelers in 2024. He had a 2.57 ERA with 78 strikeouts in 66.2 innings in 49 appearances.

Curvelo’s minor league contract expires in 2024, and based on his recent performance, he’ll be a great addition to any team that comes after him.

Seattle has been praised for developing its pitching over the past few seasons, and based on reports, it looks like another team will reap the benefits of that.
