Biden Admin Warns Migrants of Possible Border Expansion After Trump Wins

The Biden administration on Wednesday warned migrants not to listen to smugglers trying to push them to enter the country illegally before former President Donald Trump returns to the White House in January, asserting the administration will continue to enforce its immigration laws.

Trump won the presidential election early Wednesday and vowed to tighten border security and crack down on illegal immigration. The victory eased fears that a wave of migrants would try to enter the country illegally before Trump could make any changes to immigration policy.

The Department of Homeland Security said it has not yet seen such a surge in migrants. according to NBC News.

“Migrants should not believe the lies of smugglers,” a Customs and Border Protection spokesman said. “The fact remains that the United States continues to enforce immigration laws and migrants must use safe, legal and orderly pathways to come to the United States.”

While officials have not reported an increase in the number of migrants trying to flock to the United States, WhatsApp messages indicate that immigrants are talking about Trump closing the border as soon as he takes office on January 20.

“He will come to power on January 21. He can’t issue any decree yet,” one user said. Another replied: “Not much (time) left.” He already has orders in his head.”

Another user incorrectly stated that Trump would take office on January 10, meaning they had less time than they thought.

“You have until January,” another person said.
