These animals are more active during the breeding season and are more likely to cross roads, bridges and highways.

It’s always wise to drive carefully in areas where deer and elk live, but fall is an especially important time to be alert to their presence, the DEC said.

Knowing what to do if you encounter a deer or elk on or near a road can greatly reduce the likelihood of an accident.

So drive carefully, stay alert and slow down.
