Who won the swing states? Maps show election results across 7 battlefields

(NEXSTAR) – Every vote matters, but votes in seven key battleground states are being watched more closely than others, at least when it comes to the 2024 presidential race.

Seven states – Arizona, Georgia, Michigan, Nevada, North Carolina, Pennsylvania and Wisconsin – had a realistic chance of going either way, making them crucial to victories for both former President Donald Trump and Vice President Kamala Harris.

As of Wednesday morning, Trump had won five elections, while Harris had won none.

Decision Decision HQ at NewsNation projected that Trump would win North Carolina, Georgia, Pennsylvania, Wisconsin and Nevada, enough to secure the White House.

The number of electoral votes in each state ranges from six in Nevada to 19 in Pennsylvania. A candidate does not need to win all seven votes to become president – just 270 electoral votes.

A victory in Pennsylvania was enough to secure Trump’s presidency, even if Arizona and Michigan remained too close to call. Wisconsin was called out by Trump less than an hour later, and Nevada followed overnight.

President Joe Biden won six of seven battleground states (all but North Carolina) in 2020, but Trump did better in 2016. When he faced Hillary Clinton, Trump won six of the seven swing states. Only Nevada turned blue in 2016.

How many electoral votes can you get?

Collectively, swing states account for an important 93 electoral votes, but not all seven are equally valuable:

  • Arizona: 11 electoral votes

  • Georgia: 16 electoral votes (Decision Desk HQ projected for Trump)

  • Michigan: 15 electoral votes

  • Nevada: 6 electoral votes (Decision Desk HQ projected for Trump)

  • North Carolina: 16 electoral votes (Decision Desk HQ projected for Trump)

  • Pennsylvania: 19 electoral votes (Decision Desk HQ projected for Trump)

  • Wisconsin: 10 electoral votes (Decision Desk HQ projected for Trump)

How long will it take to count the votes?

We could wait until election night for full election results in some key states. While Georgia was expected to be called out earlier, slower processing was expected in other key battlegrounds.

Wisconsin, for example, is not allowed to begin processing mail-in ballots until Election Day, which is expected to cause delays. Arizona can begin preprocessing the ballots it receives before Tuesday, but a large number of mail-in ballots are expected to be sent out on Election Day. The Hill reports this.and it will take some time.

Of course, the closer the race in any state, the longer it will take to determine a clear winner.
