The film, a sequel to Rankin’s award-winning surrealist film The Twentieth Century, is a comedy set in a rejuvenated Canada where Persian and French are the two official languages. It follows the lives of several characters, including schoolchildren Negin and Nazgol, who find a sum of money frozen in winter ice and try to retrieve it. Meanwhile, Massoud leads a group of increasingly confused tourists through Winnipeg’s monuments and historical sites. Matthew quits his meaningless job at a Quebec government office and goes on a mysterious journey to visit his mother. “The Universal Language” was written by Piruz Nemati and Ila Firuzabadi.

In his review in Cannes Diversity’Peter Debruge called it “A delightful cross-cultural hybrid designed to highlight our differences.”

The film previously won the Canadian Discovery Award at the Toronto International Film Festival, as well as numerous international laurels. He has also performed at the New York Film Festival, Chicago International Film Festival and BFI London.

“The goal of our film is to work from a position of no boundaries and absolute belonging. We hope that in a time of increasingly harsh ambivalence and lightning-quick reactions, our film will be a testament to the fundamental ability of people – who, as you can imagine, are vast distances between them – to create a gentle world together and even have a little laugh before the sun goes down. – Rankin said.

“‘Universal Language’ was created by a group of very close and very crazy friends, and our prismatic, interdimensional Venn diagram of Winnipeg in Tehran in Montreal is an expression of our friendship and our life together,” the director said, arguing that “cinema must provide new ways imagine the absurd, wonderful and very limited time that we have to live here in this world.”

Oscilloscopes President Daniel Berger said the company has mastered Rankin“Twentieth Century” and described him as a “rare and dynamic talent”. “The Universal Language has received phenomenal love from both the public and critics. Collaborating with such a creative team is truly inspiring, and we believe this film has the power to brighten the world for everyone who sees it.”

“The Universal Language” was produced by Sylvain Corbeil’s Metafilms.
