Building patient trust through proactive care with Altron HealthTech and EngageMX. Here’s how.

It’s that time of year when breast cancer and prostate cancer awareness months remind the public to be proactive when it comes to their health. But as doctors know all too well, there is a gap between good intentions and meaningful action. Reminding patients to get their checkups is one of the easiest ways to improve outcomes, but staying on top of the process can be an administrative nightmare for healthcare providers.

Building patient trust through proactive care with Altron HealthTech and EngageMX. Here's how.

This is where EngageMX comes in. This innovative South African digital health assistant, created by Altron HealthTech, was developed by Dr Benji Ozinski with the participation of Professor Carol-Ann Benn and Professor Geoffrey Wing. Since its launch two years ago, it has won recognition from both doctors and patients. The EngageMX platform has served more than 250,000 patients, resulting in a 37% increase in screenings and a 25% decrease in chronic disease complications.

How does this work

EngageMX combines practice data, pharmacy data and pathology data to create unique health and risk profiles for each patient. This allows the system to identify people who may need preventative care, such as cancer screening, screening for chronic diseases, or special follow-up tests. Patients receive personalized reminders from their doctors encouraging them to take preventive measures, such as scheduling a mammogram or prostate screening.

“As busy physicians, we don’t have time to review every patient’s medical history every day,” notes Dr. Ozinski. “We have too many poorly controlled chronic patients and not enough screening.” That’s the challenge he and Altron HealthTech set out to solve with EngageMX, and doctors using it say the approach works.

“I have been a client of Engage for over a year,” says Dr. Dean Alon Sevel. “This has significantly increased patient follow-up and review consultations, and my patients feel cared for and involved in managing their health.”

Dr. Melinda Whitfield, director of Health with Heart, has seen a marked improvement in patient adherence since her practice began using EngageMX. “By proactively linking patients to needed health care interventions, such as checkups or chronic disease management appointments, the system effectively increases patient engagement and adherence to recommended health protocols. This proactive approach has resulted in improved health outcomes for our patients and a reduction in missed appointments.”

Developed by doctors for doctors

Patient-centered care is a buzzword right now, and it’s understandable that there is a lot of enthusiasm about the potential role of technology in cancer treatment and chronic disease management. But new solutions only work if they are deeply rooted in the user’s understanding. While working with Altron HealthTech to develop EngageMX, Dr. Ozinski realized that while many patients don’t show up for appointments and often arrive too late, doctors simply don’t have the time to follow up and remind them. Did doctors know how many of their patients agreed to follow-up visits? It was important to actively involve the physician in the solution, but this could not be an administrative burden.

Now that EngageMX has been on the market for two years, it is clear that the beauty of this type of technology is that it takes the pressure off busy people and makes patient-centered care a reality. Data-driven healthcare allows for a personalized approach to each patient, including their genome, their medications and their lifestyle. Additionally, the proactive approach means that instead of waiting for symptoms to appear, EngageMX encourages patients to attend routine screenings, reducing the risk of late diagnosis and improving overall health outcomes.

“I lost fewer clients due to follow-up, and overall it increased my productivity and efficiency,” adds Dr. Sevel. “By engaging directly with them, they feel mutually cared for and say this is a first-of-its-kind health promotion service.”

As we focus on raising cancer awareness this November, EngageMX’s proactive care model emphasizes that early detection saves lives by making it easier for healthcare providers to partner with patients to take ownership of their health. Technology and human connection working together: this is the future of healthcare.
