Orangeburg’s Govan ‘Humiliated’ to Return to House

Jerry Govan was given a second chance to serve in the Columbia State House.

The Orangeburg Democrat is looking to roll up his sleeves and get to work again after a two-year absence. This time he will represent the 93rd House District.

“I am thrilled to once again serve the great citizens of South Carolina in Orangeburg, Calhoun and Lexington counties,” Govan said.

“I praise God for this opportunity,” he said.

Govan also thanked his family, who were “supportive” during the primary and general elections, as well as everyone who supported his campaign.

He also thanked his rivals for a “well-run race.”

“We look forward to working with everyone to improve the quality of life for all residents of the 93rd District,” Govan said.

On Tuesday, Govan received 10,137 votes, ahead of Republican Krista Hassell, who received 9,118 votes. He received 65 percent of the vote in Orangeburg County, compared to 43 percent in Calhoun County and 44 percent in Lexington County.

Govan began representing the 95th District of the South Carolina House of Representatives in 1993, serving continuously until district lines were redrawn after the last census.

Govan said he is not concerned about losing the seniority he once held in the House. He said the relationships he has built and his understanding of the process are all strengths he will bring to his job.

“My license tag may not have a low number on it, but I don’t think it will greatly impact my ability to perform tasks,” Govan said.

Returning to Columbia in two years will be a little different, he said, because Republicans now have supermajorities in the House and Senate.

“This will create some unique challenges depending on the agenda of both parties,” Govan said. “We can’t focus on this. My job as a representative is to be there for everyone in the district, whether they are Democrats, Republicans or Independents.”

“I’m going to put my head down and work with everyone who wants to work with me and do right by the people we were elected to represent,” Govan said.

Govan said he would represent the entire district.

“My focus and heart must be on the people. I have strong feelings and relationships with people in all three areas. I look forward to providing the best information I can, no matter where they live,” he said.

Now that he’s been elected, Govan says he plans to travel throughout the district and hear from voters.

“They have special needs,” Govan said. I need to focus on finding out what people’s needs and hopes, dreams and aspirations are.”

“I’m very excited about this opportunity,” Govan continued. “I’m looking forward to getting people into these areas.”

On the campaign trail, Govan said he would continue to push for funding for South Carolina State University, Claflin University and Orangeburg-Calhoun Technical College.

He also said the county must be “better prepared to handle both the ups and downs of economic growth and development.”

Govan also promised to “keep the lines of communication open through town hall meetings, legislative newsletters and personal communications.”
