Milwaukee Brewers GM Considers Trading All-Star Devin Williams

Last offseason, the Milwaukee Brewers traded former Cy Young Award winner Corbin Burns and extended 19-year-old Jackson Churio before he even played in the major leagues.

The moves were made by President of Baseball Operations Matt Arnold, who just won the MLB Executive of the Year award. He’s clearly not afraid to take risks, and it all paid off as the Brewers won the National League Central and made the playoffs again.

Is he willing to take another risk this year and potentially deal with All-Star closer Devin Williams?

He addressed the possibility this week at a general managers’ meeting in Texas.

According to Mark Feinsand of MLB.com:

“Obviously we have to be open to things like that, but I think he makes our team better,” Arnold said. “We must be open to such actions; if we think something good is coming, we always have to listen.”

Williams is entering the final year of his contract with Milwaukee, and this is the same situation the team was in when it dealt with Burns. Moreover, they traded closer Josh Hader for the 2022 season, so they were willing to move great players to maintain financial flexibility and gain prospects in return.

However, last season they decided to keep their pal Willie Adams rather than sell him. He gave the Brewers an MVP-caliber campaign. He will likely leave as a free agent this offseason.

Williams, 30, missed last season due to injury but still made 22 appearances. He went 1-0 with a 1.25 ERA in 21.2 innings. Williams made 14 saves. Brewers moved into October.

Williams is 27-10 lifetime with a 1.83 ERA. He was named to the National League All-Star team in 2022 and 2023.
