NYPD is looking for a gunman who shot a man before fleeing on the subway.

NEW YORK — Police were searching Thursday for a man they said shot and killed another man on a Manhattan street before fleeing into the city’s vast subway system, causing delays during the morning commute.

The shooting happened around 9 a.m. on the Upper West Side. The 47-year-old victim suffered gunshot wounds to the leg and shoulder and is in stable condition at the hospital, police said.

The shooter fled to the nearby 72nd Street subway station.

Police responding to the shooting ordered the gunmen to lie down on the subway floor and shelter in place while they searched for the suspect. They also cut power to the station and stopped trains.

The search affected C train service, which resumed with delays after service was suspended in both directions.

Police have not released the names of the alleged shooter or the victim. They also declined to say whether they knew each other or what may have prompted the shooting.
