Family, friends and fellow officers gather to remember slain Chicago police officer’s dedication to service

Family, friends, classmates and officers gathered Thursday night for a Mass for slain Chicago police officer Enrique Martinez, who was killed during a traffic stop Monday.

His best friend and fellow soldier, Andres Naranjo, shared memories of their bond and dedication to service.

Martinez, 26, grew up in the West Lawn neighborhood on Chicago’s southwest side. He attended St. Nicholas of Tolentino School from preschool through eighth grade, where he met his best friend Naranjo.

Their friendship lasted 22 years and was based on shared jokes, stories and a mutual commitment to service.

“We took policing very seriously and with pride. It was very important to us, especially because we could help the community, help others,” Naranjo said.

Naranjo worked for the Chicago Police Department for five years.

Martinez was scheduled to celebrate his third year on the force on Dec. 27, but his life was cut short Monday night while on duty in Chicago.

“I didn’t react. I was just frozen. It’s just incredible that someone I knew so close to me, so personally, this happened to him so unexpectedly,” Naranjo said.

Martinez is also survived by an older brother, who is a police officer, and a younger sister. All three siblings grew up in West Lawn and attended St. Nicholas School.

“He brought a smile to your face when he walked into the room. He was very loved by his classmates and teachers,” said school principal Marian Menden.

Martinez was recently engaged, loved animals and was the owner of two dogs. He had big dreams and always wanted to become a police officer.

“He always wanted to be a police officer. Ever since we were kids, he… I could swear he dressed up as a cop for Halloween one year a year,” said classmate Jahaida Figueroa. “He was so alive, he was just great.”

Funeral arrangements for Martinez have not yet been announced.
