“We watch everything in subtitles because we’re 90 years old,” said Bush Hager, 42, apparently referring to the TV-watching habit she shares with her husband: Henry Hagar.

Kotb, 60, quickly backtracked and asked for clarification before exclaiming: “Are you reading the subtitles?!”

Bush Hager’s emphatic response drew a wave of applause from the live studio audience, and the reaction inspired Bush Hager to stand up and grin. “Thank you everyone,” she said. “I want to say: thank you for accepting me in my old age.”

“Wait, wait, wait. I have a question,” Kotb said. “Do you have subtitles because you can’t hear them?” After Bush Hager confirmed that this was indeed the reason, Kotb said she was “just checking.”

“Does this distract from reading while the plot…” Kotb continued, before cutting herself off. She then bemoaned filmmakers who “spend so much time working” on TV shows and films, despite viewer habits like Bush Hager’s that rely on “word reading.”

Bush Hager insisted she wasn’t distracted by the subtitles, explaining that they appeared “at the very bottom” of the TV screen.

After the debate, the show invited viewers to voice their opinions on the use of subtitles. While both Bush Hager and Kotb found allies in the comments section, the majority of people said they were “Side by side with you, Jenna!”

“The PRO SUBTITLE team is here! ,” one fan wrote, while another said “the subtitles must be on.”

“Subtitles 100% of the time!” another fan agreed.

“Yes to subtitles! Sometimes the mixed music makes it difficult to understand the accents,” explained one viewer.

Others sided with Kotb, with one asking: “How can you ‘watch’ the program when you ‘read’ the words at the bottom of the screen?” as another shared: “I’m with Hoda, turn off the subtitles!”

“I find this very distracting .. I’m dreading the day I might have to do this ,” one detractor wrote, while another said they only use subtitles if the show or movie they’re watching , not in English, “and then there is no choice.”
