After prolonged hot days, Chennai and its adjoining areas experienced isolated heavy rainfall on Thursday, which is forecast to continue but at a lesser intensity till November 12, officials at the Regional Meteorological Center (RMC) in Chennai said. An orange alert was issued for Chennai and 25 districts of Tamil Nadu on Thursday.

Since October 1, Chennai and Tamil Nadu have received excessive rainfall of 7% and 13% respectively during the northeast monsoon season, the official said. The northeast monsoon brings an average of 45 cm of rainfall to Tamil Nadu, accounting for 48% of the annual rainfall, and an average of 87 cm for Chennai, accounting for 63% of the capital’s annual rainfall. This year, the monsoon arrived on October 15, forecasters said.

The rains on Thursday did not cause any havoc, but intermittent spells provided some respite from the heat of the past few weeks in the city. It was carried by a cyclonic circulation over the central parts of the southern Bay of Bengal, which was located at an altitude of about 3.1 km above mean sea level. According to RMC, the trough extends from the Gulf of Mannar through a cyclonic circulation over the Bay of Bengal.

Thunderstorms with lightning are likely to occur at one or two places over Tamil Nadu and the RMC said, adding that there will be isolated heavy rainfall at various places till November 12.

In Chennai and its adjoining areas such as Kancheepuram, Chengalpattu and Tiruvallur, “the sky is likely to be mostly cloudy during the next 24 hours,” said RMC Deputy Director P. Senthamaraj Kannan.

“Moderate to heavy rain with thunderstorms and lightning is possible in some areas. The maximum temperature is likely to be around 29°C and the minimum temperature is likely to be around 25°C.”

On Thursday, Madurai airport recorded the highest maximum temperature of 35.2°C while Erode district recorded the lowest minimum temperature of 18.8°C in Tamil Nadu.
