Wayne Rooney and Des Buckingham react to Mark Robins’ sacking

Plymouth Argyle head coach Wayne Rooney has described Coventry City’s decision to sack long-time coach Mark Robins as “crazy”, while Oxford City head coach Des Buckingham has described the league’s revolving managerial door as “scary”.

Robins was appointed manager of the Sky Blues in 2017 for his second spell at the club, but his contract was terminated on Thursday following a poor start to the season.

“I think it’s crazy, I really do,” Rooney told BBC Radio Devon.

“What he has done over the last few years with Coventry City – I think two play-off finals and an FA Cup semi-final – has consistently put them in a good position in the league.”

“Then he loses his job, probably because of a few bad results, I think it’s absolutely crazy.”

Robins’ departure means Derby County manager Paul Warne, appointed in 2022, is now the Championship’s longest-serving manager.

“It’s never nice to see anyone lose their job, especially Mark Robins who has been there for many years, but that is the nature of the job,” Oxford boss Buckingham said.

“I haven’t even been here a year and I’m pretty high up among the longest-serving managers in the English Football League, which is pretty scary.”
