A man has been found guilty of murdering a teenager in a botched robbery over Yeezy sneakers. Chaos has broken out

Adrian Cosby was almost stone-faced Friday as Miami-Dade Circuit Court Judge Miguel M. de la O read the jury’s verdict finding him guilty of killing a teenage high school student four years ago during a botched robbery.

He began to shake slightly as the father of Andrea Camps-Lacayo, the 18-year-old he was convicted of murdering, began speaking during the sentencing.

And he erupted, and chaos reigned in the 4-1 courtroom of Miami-Dade Criminal Court as Alex Camps addressed Cosby, called him a “monster” and then blamed his actions on his upbringing.

“What the hell are you talking about?” was one of the few things Cosby had previously said about how four Miami-Dade Correctional Facility officers and law enforcement officers were able to subdue him as he tried to reach Camps and climb over the low wall behind him where the family was. and friends were sitting.

By this point, everyone in the courtroom was already on their feet. Some moved in search of shelter. Others, angered by the verdict and Camps’ speech, shouted at him and rushed to leave the courtroom. About 20 minutes later, when order had been restored, de la Haut read out the verdict. Cosby did not return.

Life for the murder of Andrea Camps-Lacayo. Life for the attempted murder of her boyfriend Sergio Berben. And 25 years for attempting to rob a pair of teenagers who were students at the Terra Institute of Environmental Studies in West Kendall.

“I told you last time that I couldn’t bring justice,” de la O told the family. “This is a tragedy for everyone. They lost a son, and you lost a daughter. And I can’t do anything for anyone.”

Jurors say Cosby fired the fatal bullet

It took jurors less than two hours to conclude that Cosby, 22, fired the bullet that killed Camps-Lacayo during a botched attempt to steal three pairs of rare and expensive sneakers from her boyfriend, Berben, in Homestead four years ago. Cosby is the second defendant in the case to be found guilty. In February, 24-year-old George Oshane Walton was sentenced to life in prison for his role in the murder.

Jurors heard that Berben, through a friend, agreed to meet with a man named Eric Ridon, who was to buy three pairs of Yeezys — a joint venture between rap superstar Kanye West and Addidas — for $935. Berben, a sneaker designer, has been making extra money since high school by selling sneakers on the black market through his Instagram account.

By that day, April 7, 2020, Berben and Ridon had not yet agreed on where to meet, so Berben invited Camps-Lacayo to breakfast.

While they were eating, Berben’s cell phone rang. It was Readon who suggested that they meet him in the suburb of Homestead. So Berben set off in his white Jeep Wrangler with Camps-Lacayo in the passenger seat. Once the pair entered the gated community, he spoke again with Readon, who advised him to park in front of an abandoned house further down the street.

Berben told jurors he was holding one pair of shoes and his girlfriend was holding the other two when Walton showed up instead of Readon. They started talking through the driver’s window. Walton never showed a weapon or attempted to steal the shoes.

But while they were talking, Berben said, he noticed in his sideview mirror that Cosby was approaching the Jeep from behind. As Cosby approached Walton, he opened fire, striking Berben first in the left arm and the bullet exited and struck Camps-Lacayo in the abdomen.

Berben hit the Jeep and ran outside the complex, where he called 911. Camps-Lacayo passed out while pressing a towel over her bullet wound and listening to the 911 operator’s instructions.

The defense said Cosby didn’t shoot.

During closing arguments Friday, defense attorney Dustin Tischler insisted on the lack of physical and forensic evidence presented at trial and said Berben was mistaken in identifying Cosby as the shooter.

He showed jurors how easy it is to make a mistake in a tense situation, noting that he initially told officers Walton was wearing a black shirt even though he was wearing a white sweatshirt the day of the shooting.

“It was an unspeakable tragedy. Andrea was a beautiful, beautiful girl and she had her whole life ahead of her,” Tischler said during closing arguments. “But he (Berben) made a mistake in those brief one or two seconds when the firearm was delivered and fired. He said it was Cosby.

In response, Miami-Dade Assistant State’s Attorney Sarah Imm said she found it incredible that the defense would expect jurors to believe that Cosby, who had been with Walton before and was with him again after the murder, just happened to show up in the Jeep when Camps Lacayo was killed.

“The video (grainy and shot from a distance) clearly shows who has the firearm,” she said.

After closing and before the eruption, Alex Camps hugged Berben and told him his family loved him.

“We want you to know that what happened that day was not your fault,” Camps told Berben. “It’s really the three monsters’ fault.”
