12 budget destinations for winter sun that are worth visiting

As we plunge into the reality of cold days and long nights, the temptation winter sun takes over. Travel agency Hayes Travel notes that Canary Islands – a traditional winter sun destination for British heat seekers – remains popular, along with Cape Verde and Asiaand also Caribbean cruises.

Intrepid also reported that orders for Guatemala doubled compared to last month. “With ancient Mayan ruins, plenty of outdoor activities and diverse landscapes, the country is growing in popularity as an alternative to more popular Central American countries,” says McGuire. “December and January are some of the best months to visit, with warm temperatures and little rain.”

Morocco, Tunisia and Egypt have long been attractive winter destinations thanks to their mild climate and relatively short flights from the UK. EasyJet Holidays reports strong demand for Agadir on Morocco’s Atlantic coast, Egypt’s Red Sea resort. Hurghada and the Mediterranean coast of Tunisia this winter.

There is significant demand for Agadir as a beachside alternative to the busy medina of Marrakech. Half an hour’s drive north of this coastal town is Taghazout Bay, a fishing village and a growing popular destination for surfers and luxury resorts such as Fairmont, Radisson Blu, Hyatt and Hilton, which have beach hotels here. EasyJet offers 11 hotels departing from Manchester and Luton, with packages ranging from quick three-night holidays to 28-night extended stays this winter. A week at a four-star all-inclusive hotel Djerba Aqua Resort costs from £276 per person for flights departing 7 December.

Holidays of love finds that Mahdia in Tunisia has seen the biggest increase in bookings, up 474 percent since last winter. Adventure tourism operator G Adventure reports that New Zealand is turning heads for winter sunshine, with orders from the UK up 25 per cent year on year. Walking, cycling and kayaking around the North and South Islands are becoming popular, according to managing director Brian Young.
