As you might not have guessed, the Cybertruck’s third-quarter results also completed Tesla’s takeover of the top three spots on the electric vehicle sales chart. But the angular truck has a long way to go before it can even think about moving up to first or second place. Second place in the period from July to September went to recently updated Model 3whose sales rose 9.7 percent to 58,423, while the Model 3 held on to first place despite its deliveries falling 9.1 percent to 86,801.

Other EV winners in the third quarter included the Cadillac Lyriq (up 139.4 percent to 7,224 units), Ford F-150 Lightning (up 104.5 percent but still miles behind the Cybertruck with 7,162 units), Nissan Leaf (up 187.5 percent to 4,514 units) and Lexus RZ (up 96.7 percent to 2,742). Sales of the Toyota bZ4X also improved by 45.3 percent to 4,109, while its twin, the Subaru Solterra, posted a more modest gain of 34.4 percent to 3,752.

But not everyone can become a winner. VW ID.4 sales fell 57.8 percent to 4,518, Tesla Model S fell 46.7 percent to 1,669, Hyundai Ionic 6 lost 56.9 percent of its sales, which fell to 2,158, the Audi A8 e-tron found only 1,745 buyers (down 51.5 percent) and BMWThe i7 fell 47 percent to 573. The least popular electric car in America was the Genesis G80. Only 155 people bought one, down 67.1 percent from the third quarter of 2023.

When looking at sales by brand, it’s no surprise that Tesla leads the pack with 166,923 vehicles sold. Ford is far behind in second place with 23,509 units (up 12 percent), while Chevrolet, with sales growth of 25.6 percent, rounds out the top three with 19,993 units.
