ANC leaders accused of state capture who failed to appear before the integrity commission will be referred to a disciplinary commission

JOHANNESBURG – Accused power grab leaders of the African National Congress (ANC) who failed to appear before the party’s integrity commission will now be referred to its national disciplinary committee.

The Integrity Commission is an advisory body to the party’s highest governing body that deals with any unethical or immoral behavior by party members.

During his closing speech at Sunday’s special national executive committee (NEC) meeting, ANC president Cyril Ramaphosa announced reforms to the commission’s terms of reference.

Some ANC members, particularly veterans, have expressed concern that the ethics commission’s recommendations are often ignored.

Some party members who are believed to have brought the organization into disrepute were also flagged for failing to appear before its internal watchdog.

Ramaphosa said the NEC had decided that all integrity commission reports should be followed through.

“The IEC has reviewed all the integrity commission reports. The IEC noted that several reports were implemented, while others were overshadowed by certain events. The NEC instructed the Secretary General to process those recommendations that were accepted by the NEC and report to the ethics commission on these issues.”

The NEC also decided to amend the integrity commission’s terms of reference to better define its responsibilities.
