Police said a white SUV was ignoring a traffic light when it was hit by a gray SUV, which was captured on surveillance video.

One person in a white SUV was taken to the University of Chicago Medical Center, where he later died, police said. Another person in the white SUV was taken to the hospital in critical condition.

The female driver of the gray SUV suffered a concussion and was taken to Advocate Christ Hospital, where she is listed in serious condition, police said. The male passenger was taken to Advocate Christ Hospital with a hip injury and was listed in serious condition.

One man said he saw passengers being pulled from the car and said he was grateful none of the gas pumps were damaged in the crash.

“I heard the impact because I turned my head for a second, and when I turned and looked back, all I saw was a gray car that pushed her almost into the gas pump, and the white car almost flipped over,” said Larry, a witness to the accident. “The airbags popped out of the car and I just looked, ‘Wow,’ and by then everything had stopped.”

Police said traffic citations were pending and the investigation was being handled by the Major Incident Investigation Unit.
