Todd Chrisley reacts to being fired from his job at the prison chapel.

Todd Chrisley was recently fired from his job at the prison where he is currently serving his sentence For wire fraud, conspiracy to commit bank fraud and conspiracy deceive the United States.

The 55-year-old volunteered for nearly two years as a chaplain’s assistant at the Pensacola federal prison camp and oversaw the creation of Christian, Jewish and Muslim services, according to the reality TV star’s lawyer, Jay Surgent.

Surgent told TODAY.com that Chrisley is “disappointed and emotionally hurt” after being removed from the role “for no reason.” Surgent says Chrisley no longer has access to the chapel office where he worked as a volunteer.

Surgent learned that his client, a former Chrisley Knows Best star, was suspended because he was “associating with people who were accepted” into the prison’s drug abuse program (RDAP). USA is owned by NBCUniversal, TODAY’s parent company.

Surgent says no “real reason” was given for the termination, but they believe the termination was because RDAP members had “access to the outside world.”

TODAY.com reached out to Pensacola Federal Prison Camp on Oct. 24 for more information and did not receive a response.

Surgent says his client “became friends with many inmates” who “looked to him for advice and guidance” during his nearly two years in prison.

“They also seek him out to discuss their specific situations or any emotional issues they may have and to coordinate the religious services that some of these inmates will be attending,” Surgent says.

Surgent says the position, which gave Chrisley “the opportunity to be involved in his faith and help other people with theirs,” was a “big part” of his client’s life and really “meant a lot” to him.

Although Chrisley has served in his role for the past two years, the prison chaplain has “always proven to administration” that he is “exemplary in his job,” Surgent said.

Although Chrisley lost his job as a prison chaplain’s assistant, his lawyer says the situation “only strengthened his faith that God would protect him, Julie (Chrisley, his wife) and his entire family.”

Surgent says reality star He did not give up hope that one day his sentence could be commuted.

“Todd also believes that his total sentence of 12 years was excessive and he will use all legal means available to him to adjust his sentence to fit the alleged crime,” Surgent says.

Surgent confirms that Chrisley asked to be “transferred to another facility.”
