Elections 2024 | Raleigh Municipal Election: Who’s Running for Raleigh Mayor and City Council?

RALEIGH, N.C. (WTVD) — Eight council seats, including Raleigh’s mayor, are up for sale in Wake County. Voters will have the opportunity to cast their ballot on Election Day in November during Raleigh’s municipal elections.

Mayor of Raleigh Mary Anne Baldwin announced in April that she will not run for re-election in the 2024 race, saying she wants to focus her energy on herself, her family and finding other ways to serve.

The city council consists of eight members elected for a two-year term. The three members, including the mayor, are elected at-large, meaning they represent the entire city, according to the law. City of Raleigh.

Here five candidates for Raleigh’s new mayor in the 2024 elections:

Janet Cowell

Former State Treasurer Janet Cowell told ABC11 she plans to ease tensions in the city council and bring urban energy back to the city center.

Terrence (Truth) Root

Terrence Rootrunner-up in the 2022 Raleigh mayoral election is running again with what he calls a fresh vision for leadership in the capital. His campaign platform focuses on six key areas: housing security, transportation security, economic security, safety, digital security and public health.

James L. Shaughnessy IV

James Shaughnessy is the youngest candidate in this year’s Raleigh mayoral election. His campaign platform focuses on housing, mental health recovery, infrastructure efficiency, public transportation, housing loans for city employees, government spending, farms for schools and worker education.

Where to vote

You can find the location and hours of early voting sites in your county. Hereand also Here.

Any eligible voter can apply for assistance at their polling place. For more information about helping voters with disabilities, Click here. Voting at the curb is also available to those eligible.

Voters who receive an absentee ballot can deliver their ballot to their county board of elections or to an election official at an early voting site during voting hours.

When are polling stations open?

  • From Monday to Friday – from 8:00 to 19:30.
  • Saturday – from 8:00 to 19:30.
  • Sunday – from 13:00 to 18:00.

Important tips for voters

Be sure to take it with you photo ID. North Carolina voters will be required to show identification when registering to vote.

Same-day registration is available during early voting, although it is not available to most voters on Election Day.

Key dates and deadlines

October 17: Start of in-person early voting
October 29: The deadline for submitting an application for absentee voting is (17:00).
November 2: In-person early voting ends (3 p.m.).
November 5: General election day.
November 5: The deadline for returning absentee ballots is 7:30 p.m.
