Arsenal vs Liverpool predictions

The suspension of star centre-back William Saliba has added insult to injury for Arsenal ahead of their Premier League title clash with Liverpool and could see the depleted Gunners sidelined.

If Martin Odegaard’s injury wasn’t bad enough, Arsenal were already sweating over Bukayo Saka’s fitness even before Saliba saw red in last weekend’s 2-0 defeat to Bournemouth.

It is an unusual situation for Arsenal manager Mike Arteta to be without the steely Saliba, who has missed just 11 Premier League games since making his Premier League debut in August 2022, and the situation was exacerbated when Riccardo Calafiori limped off in the midweek League win champions over Shakhtar. Donetsk.

The Gunners have won just five of those 11 matches without Saliba, with their win percentage falling from 74 per cent to 45 per cent and their goals conceded per game rising from 0.8 to 1.6, highlighting cause for concern.

Even before Saliba was sent off in the 30th minute against Bournemouth, Arsenal had yet to gain a foothold in the game and there was clearly less attacking intent without Odegaard and Saka.

Arsenal showed some signs of distress even before the defeat to the Cherries: they needed two injury-time goals to beat Leicester 4–2 at home, while they scored against Southampton before than they perked up.

There will be a greater reliance on Kai Havertz in attack, but he is not a keen striker, so now appears to be the ideal time for Liverpool to move to the Emirates.

The Reds have made a smooth transition from Jurgen Klopp to Arne Slot, with the Dutchman leading them to the top of the Premier League table with seven wins from eight games.

Much will be revealed about Liverpool in the coming weeks as they have had a fairly soft Premier League schedule so far, but last Sunday’s 2-1 win over Chelsea was another standout performance.

The Blues dominated possession but were limited to just two shots on target, and a record of just three goals conceded in eight league games shows how well Liverpool defend.

Liverpool’s only blip this season was a 1-0 home defeat to Nottingham Forest in mid-September, but they have produced a perfect response, winning eight in a row in all competitions.

Another win at the Emirates would take them seven points clear of the Gunners and that could be the most likely scenario as Arsenal look far less prepared for the challenge ahead.

Given his absence, Arteta may choose a structure that makes it difficult for Liverpool to play through them, making the draw very important.

However, Liverpool, blessed with an abundance of attacking talent in Luis Diaz, Cody Gakpo, Darwin Nunez and Mohema Salah, still look likely winners and deserve support in the no-stakes draw market.
