Three family members are dead after a shooting was reported at a Huntsville home Friday night.

Ontario Provincial Police said they were called to a home on Highview Drive shortly before 9 p.m. for reports of a barricaded person and shots fired.

Three people, including the gunman, were later found dead, according to OPP.

“There is no threat to public safety. However, residents in the Highview Drive area should expect a heavy police presence throughout the weekend,” OPP added.

They did not identify the three.

In a separate news release issued Saturday, provincial police provided more details about what happened.

The Special Investigations Unit (SIU) said the 52-year-old man called police and reported that “he had harmed two family members” and that “he had a weapon.”

OPP deployed crisis negotiators and its emergency response team. The SIU said officers set up a perimeter and made contact with the man by phone.

“Shortly after communication was lost, a drone was sent to the house to search. The bodies of two deceased women were found, as well as the body of a deceased man,” said the SIU, which is called to investigate whenever police are involved in incidents that result in death, serious injury or allegations of sexual assault.

The cause of death is not yet known.

The SBI brought four investigators and two forensic experts to the case. The agency said an autopsy is scheduled for Monday.

The SIU asks anyone with information to contact investigators at 1-800-787-8529 or online at https://siu.on.ca/en/appeals.php.
