According to the Penn State women’s volleyball website:

  • Penn State is 2-2 in its all-time series with USC. The teams played for the first time in 1980.
  • The teams have not played each other since 2011. The Nittany Lions won that match in five sets.
  • Penn State is 0-1 on the road against USC after losing to the Trojans in the 2000 NCAA regional final.

USC enters this matchup ranked 16th in the country, 14-5 overall and 6-3 in the Big Ten after three straight wins over UCLA (3-2), Maryland (3- 0) and Rutgers (3-0) and then a 3-2 score in favor of visiting Michigan State (20-25, 22-25, 27-25, 25-20, 15-13) on Thursday night.

The Trojans finished with more kills (63-58) and better hitting (.263 to .225) than the Spartans, while also having more blocks (15-10) and more assists (59-55). But the Spartans outshot the Trojans 60-43 and both teams had seven scoring aces.

Senior setter Mia Tuaniga dished out a season-high 49 assists and posted a .263 hitting percentage (63 K, 22e, 156 att) for the Trojans, along with nine digs, five kills (.833), three blocks and a serve-ace. Her 11th assist in the match was the 4,000th of her career.

Penn State will fly east after this matchup, with home games scheduled for Oct. 30 (Michigan) and Nov. 1 (Iowa).
