What went wrong: Arkansas vs. Mississippi State

STARKVILLE, Miss. – Mississippi State’s game against Arkansas wasn’t an exact copy of the previous game, but it followed a similar pattern.

The Bulldogs were unable to capitalize on their scoring chances early and struggled to stop the opposing team’s offense, especially on the ground late in the game as the Bulldogs were preparing for a comeback.

Mississippi has seen some areas of improvement (such as fines), but some familiar problems have resurfaced.

Here are some of the key things that went wrong for Mississippi State in its 58-25 loss to Arkansas.

Revolutions. For Mississippi State to win against an SEC team, it will need to play a near-perfect game. Committing five turnovers in a game is far from ideal. Sure, the two turnovers came late in the fourth quarter, but a failure on the second play from scrimmage is about as bad a start as the Bulldogs could have had.

Start protection. It’s becoming apparent what Mississippi State’s two biggest defensive challenges are. The Bulldogs can’t stop rushing attacks and can’t put pressure on opposing defensemen. It’s been a month since the Bulldogs recorded a sack, and they just gave up over 350 yards for the second time this season.

Missed field goal. Kyle Ferry missed a 42-yard field goal in the second quarter that would have made the score 17–10. Instead, the Razorbacks took possession and scored their third touchdown of the game five plays later.
