The Department of Information and Public Relations launches a series of trainings on radio broadcasting in the interior of the country

The Guyana Academy of Media and Communications, established under the Department of Information and Public Relations in the Office of the Prime Minister, has launched a series of classes and training aimed at enhancing broadcasting skills for people in the interior and remote areas.

This initiative is part of the government’s commitment to bridging the coastal-inland divide by empowering communities to participate in Guyana’s monumental, transformative development.
As part of the series, a two-day session, which began on October 25, was held at the studios of Radio Lethem, 94.1 FM, Region 9 (Upper Takutu-Upper Esequibo), with training delivered by veteran broadcaster Merrano Isaacs, with technical support from Devon. Roberts, technical manager of the National Communications Network (NCN).

Speaking at the launch in Lethem, Gordon French, Communications Officer in the Office of the Prime Minister, expressed the government’s vision to ensure equal access to opportunity as part of Guyana’s rapid development transformation agenda.

“The purpose of the training is to provide participants with the basic broadcasting and technical operations skills required for professional radio production. Through this, we hope to create a cadre of media professionals capable of conveying unique voices and stories from deep-rooted communities, thereby promoting inclusivity and contributing to a broader understanding of the Guyanese landscape,” said French.
Twelve participants from the Lethem and Annai areas are expected to gain skills in storytelling, reporting and technical broadcasting, enabling them to create content that authentically represents their communities.

French noted that “once a pool of potential radio broadcasters willing to volunteer (in some cases part-time at regional radio stations) has been identified, ongoing training will be provided. This initiative provides everyone with the tools and skills needed to participate in our country’s development. Broadcasting training is an important step in ensuring that voices from every corner of our country are heard, respected and valued.”

Following the launch in Lethem, the training series will continue in Aishalton Region 9 and then continue into Regions 8, 1, 7 and 6.
The training series is an example of significant investment in empowering Guyanese citizens, promoting shared understanding and unity across the country. Through this initiative, the Government aims to create a strong foundation for local media professionals and contribute to the continued growth of a diverse, inclusive and sustainable media landscape in Guyana.
