Groundhog Day: Late goal costs Guernsey victory over Metropolitan Police

Guernsey midfielder Matt Loaring says it was like Groundhog Day when his side went down in stoppage time to a 3-3 draw at Metropolitan Police.

Owen Wallbridge’s 22nd-minute goal canceled out Archie Lowry’s goal against the Londoners before Ross Allen’s 41st-minute penalty and Sam Murray’s goal three minutes after the break put the Green Lions up 3-1.

But Mason Galloway converted a penalty soon after to make it 3-2 before Keenan Kirlew-Wright fired home from a half-cleared corner from the edge of the box in the fourth minute of stoppage time to ensure the points were shared.

The late goal denied Guernsey their second win of the season and left them second from bottom in the Isthmian South Central League with six points from 12 games.

“It’s like Groundhog Day for us right now,” Loaring told BBC Radio Guernsey.

“Every week the same thing happens: we seem to be playing very well, but we’re not getting what we deserve.

“It’s another disappointing development for us today when we play against a team who, based on the way the game went, we think should have won the game quite comfortably.

“Somehow we find a way to not get points at the moment, so it’s frustrating.”
