Two people will face trial for their alleged involvement in shooting incidents that occurred within hours of each other during homecoming celebrations at North Carolina Central University over the weekend.

Denier Negash Medhin appeared in court on Monday, and Joshua Michael Virgil is scheduled to appear in court on November 25.

Medina is charged with discharging a firearm on the premises of an educational institution, and Virgil is charged with possession of a weapon on the premises of an educational institution.

On Saturday, two unrelated shootings on the North Carolina Central University campus disrupted school homecoming celebrations.

The first incident occurred around 7:43 p.m. Saturday in the parking lot behind Debra Saunders-White’s residence hall. NCCU Police received reports of a shooting near the residence hall. The university said the campus was immediately put on alert. Investigators determined that three shots were fired into the air, but no one was injured.

The second shooting happened around 8:59 p.m. Saturday. Officers heard shots fired near the student services building on Eagle Campus Drive. Four people, including a North Carolina Central student, are recovering from gunshot wounds. The injuries are not considered life-threatening.

The university said it has support resources that students, faculty and staff can use as needed.
