New York Mets free agent could shake up Detroit Tigers roster

New York Mets free agent could shake up Detroit Tigers roster

Detroit Tigers are having their best season in a long time, as the franchise was able to not only end a long playoff drought, but even win a postseason series.

This winter, the Tigers are going to focus on trying to improve their team for 2025 and prove that last season was no fluke.

Detroit heads into the offseason and has two main areas they need to improve. The starting pitch will be one and the power bat in the middle of the order will be another.

Ace led them ahead of the Tigers, Tariq Skubaland after that AJ Hinch pretty much filled in the gaps. Detroit leaned heavily on its bullpen as Hinch commanded the unit admirably.

While adding a starting pitcher makes a lot of sense to bolster the rotation, the Tigers also really need to add some pop to their lineup. With so many young players at various positions, one of the most likely places for Detroit to try to make that happen is at first base.

Even though he was a first-round pick and is a top prospect for the organization, it doesn’t seem like Spencer Torkelson will be a long-term solution to this situation. While he is certainly capable of having a good career, it may not be with the Tigers.

If Detroit decides to move on from their former first-round pick, there are some really attractive options at first base. Probably the most attractive in free agency will be Pete Alonso belonging New York Mets.

Alonso will hit the free agent market as the top player at the position, and his ability to produce power makes him a great option for the Tigers. The slugger made the All-Star team the last three seasons and hit 120 home runs during that time.

Since being called up by the Mets, Alonso has become one of the best power hitters in baseball, and it seems a real possibility that he could leave New York with the development of Mark Vientos this season.

If the Tigers are willing to spend big this offseason, the 29-year-old may be their best fit to improve their team as much as possible. Adding a player capable of hitting over 40 home runs would really change the team.
