Mother arrested after 4-year-old son shoots himself in parking lot: reports

A California mother was reportedly arrested and charged on multiple charges after her 4-year-old son shot himself to death earlier this week.

According to local media reports, including CBS SacramentoABC branch KTV and NBC affiliate KSRALatisha Walker, 26, was arrested after the Sacramento Police Department said her son shot himself with a handgun around 1:45 p.m. in the 4500 block of Mack Road on Friday, Oct. 25.

Walker’s bail was set at $75,000, and she now faces three felony charges – possession of a concealed firearm in a vehicle, criminal possession of a firearm and endangering the life of a child – according to CBS Sacramento.

According to her custody status According to the Sacramento County Sheriff’s Office inmate webpage, Walker was released on Saturday, October 26th.

A spokesperson for the Sacramento Police Department did not immediately respond to PEOPLE’s request for additional information on Sunday, Oct. 27.

The shooting happened inside a vehicle in the parking lot, KCRA reported. The publication added that the child is expected to survive after being taken to a local hospital.

Walker was in the building at the time of the shooting, KCRA said, citing multiple witnesses.

According to CBS Sacramento, customers at nearby businesses heard the boy screaming for help. Shinice Cordoba, a 19-year-old who was in the nail salon at the time, told the outlet that while she didn’t hear the gunshot, she heard her mother screaming and a “noise.”

“I go outside and he’s just laying on the floor,” Cordova said. “I needed something to put pressure on his wound… I took the cloth and applied it to his wound. He talked to me and I talked to him, he was very scared.”

“He kept saying he shot himself, he shot himself. So I thought, “It’s okay, you don’t have a problem. Everything is fine,” she continued.

Cordoba added: “He wanted me to pick him up. But I had to calm him down and say: no, you can’t get up. You should stay here. And we talked about PAW Patrol and how old he is and all that. Until they came here.

A police spokesman told CBS Sacramento the child was treated at the scene before being taken to the hospital.

The person who arrived first “put pressure on his wound” and helped “keep him on his side,” according to KCRA.

Sacramento Police Department spokesman Anthony Gamble said this. Sacramento Bee that the shooting is under investigation and officers are looking into how the boy came into possession of the weapon.

Walker will make his first appearance in court on Wednesday, October 31, according to CBS Sacramento.
