Pharmaceutical Technology Program Starts at SCC Next Semester

PHOENIX — Scottsdale Community College has launched a new pharmaceutical technology program that can be completed in one semester.

The Accelerated Pharmacy Technician Certificate of Completion (CCL) is a new a nine-credit program that begins in January and was developed in conjunction with local healthcare employers.

The program will offer students the opportunity to interact with professionals in the field while completing their coursework.

The Board of Pharmacy Certification has approved a program that promises to prepare students to sit for the Pharmacy Technician Certification Examination (PTCE) or the National Health Care Association (NHA) Certification of Pharmacy Technician (ExCPT) exam, a required step in the hiring process.

Retail, hospital, and institutional pharmacy practice are just some of the job opportunities for which the program will prepare students.

These jobs in Arizona are expected to grow 19% over the next decade, with an estimated starting salary of $45,260, which is higher than the national average.

“Using feedback received from our healthcare partners, we have streamlined and improved the program to make it even more effective in providing students with the hands-on skills and knowledge they need to provide excellent patient care,” SCC President Dr. Eric Leshinski. the release says.

Meetings for new students are scheduled for from noon to 1 p.m. on November 13 and from 3 to 4 p.m. on November 19.

What topics will be covered in the pharmaceutical technology program?

The nine-credit program will cover a wide range of topics including:

  • preparation of medicines
  • handling various substances (hazardous and non-hazardous)
  • reporting guidelines (federal and state)
  • OSHA Guidelines and Best Practices
  • patient safety and quality assurance
  • order entry and processing
  • inventory control and management
  • administrative duties
  • health and wellness advice
  • Billing and reimbursement principles and practices.
