Haryana Police on Sunday (October 27) said they have launched an investigation into allegations of sexual harassment against Jind SP. Sumit Kumar after a purported letter from a woman constable detailing her ordeal surfaced online. According to the information released, an operational investigation has been launched and a detailed report will be presented soon.

“An investigation has been launched to establish the facts. The case is being investigated,” Hisar Ranj Additional DGP M Ravi Kiran said, adding that the accused himself has asked for a thorough investigation into the case.

Notably, Fatehabad Superintendent of Police Astha Modi has been asked to conduct an investigation and submit a report to the department.

About the incident

The letter, purportedly written by a woman constable and addressed to Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini, makes disturbing allegations against the Jind SP. A constable posted in the district had alleged sexual harassment by a senior official and said two women police officers in the district were supporting the officer involved.

She also stated that if action is not taken, she will have no choice but to commit suicide. Interestingly, the letter detailing the ordeal was signed by seven policewomen.

Vinesh Phogat demands punishment for the culprits

Moreover, wrestler-turned-politician Vinesh Phogat subsequently demanded punishment for the culprits. Speaking to X (formerly Twitter), MLA Julana said she has little hope that the “Haryana government or the Center will give justice to these women of the Haryana Police.”

“Their voices may have either been suppressed or are being suppressed every day… But just as all sections of society stood with us, we and the entire society are also with them. Those responsible must be punished,” she said.
