Free Roads for Deepavali 2024, October 29-30; Government paid RM38 million to concession companies

Ministry of Labor (KKR) announced that the Malaysian government will provide free travel for Class 1 (private) vehicles on highways from 00:01. Tuesday, October 29 until 23:59 Wednesday, October 30.

Free travel will be provided at toll plazas across the country, excluding those located at national borders, namely the Bangunan Sultan Iskandar toll plaza and Tanjung Kupang toll plaza in Johor. The initiative will cost the Malaysian government about RM38 million in compensation paid to highway concession companies, Works Minister Datuk Seri Alexander Nanta Linggi said in a statement.

Road users are advised to comply travel time recommendations issued by highway operators for the festive season to reduce traffic congestion during this time, as well as drive carefully, obey all traffic rules and take a rest break if tired.

Motorists are also advised to be prepared for travel, which includes ensuring the vehicle is in optimal operating condition, sufficient Touch ‘n Go card and eWallet balances are available, and for those using SmartTags, sufficient batteries.

Highway users can also access CCTV feeds provided by Highways Malaysia (LLM) on LLM website to review traffic conditions before driving, or contact the Traffic Center at 1-800-88-7752 for the latest highway information or assistance.
