Missing hiker rescued after two days in San Diego’s outback

SAN DIEGO (FOX 5/KUSI) — A woman is alive after she was found stranded on steep, rocky terrain miles under a trail in the San Diego backcountry after being missing for nearly two days.

San Diego County Sheriff’s Office Rural Law Enforcement deputies received a call from the family of an unidentified 50-year-old woman around 2 p.m. Saturday after they said they had not heard from her since 8:30 a.m. Friday. Police say she texted family members at the time saying she was going camping near the Lake Morena campground in Campo.

During the initial investigation, officers found her personal belongings in the cabin she was staying in near Morena Lake, which she had not checked out on time. They also found her vehicle near a trailhead in the area.

Deputies then called in volunteers from the Sheriff’s Search and Rescue (SAR) unit to assist in the search for the missing woman using a helicopter and SUVs, as well as a U.S. Border Patrol Search and Rescue (BORSTAR) team and search and rescue team. rescue dog.

Footprints discovered around 10pm on Saturday night led search and rescue teams in the right direction, and just after 4am Sunday crews reported finally hearing her scream back. They found her about an hour later on a steep, rocky stretch about 10 miles from her car.

She was airlifted to safety by helicopter by 8am on Sunday. Authorities say she was taken to the Morena Lake campground for treatment before being reunited with family and that she was exhausted but otherwise in good condition.

The San Diego County Sheriff’s Office was assisted in the search by the San Diego County Parks and Recreation Department and the U.S. Border Patrol, as well as the sheriff’s ASTREA unit (helicopters).
