How to Draw a Panda: Step-by-Step Guide

Pandas are loved for their adorable appearance and playful nature. Drawing a panda can be a fun and rewarding activity, whether you’re a beginner or more experienced in the art. In this tutorial, we’ll show you how to draw a panda that captures its adorable nature.

  1. Gather materials

Before you begin, make sure you have your drawing materials ready. You will need a pencil, eraser, paper and, if desired, colored pencils or markers to color your finished drawing.

  1. Draw the basic shapes

Start by sketching out the basic shapes that will form the panda’s body. Draw a large oval for the head and a slightly smaller oval underneath for the body. This will serve as the basis for your panda shape.

  1. Add feature recommendations

To accurately position facial features, draw a vertical line down the center of the oval of the head and a horizontal line in the middle. These tips will help you keep your eyes and nose symmetrical.

  1. Draw the eyes

Using the guidelines, draw two large circles for the panda’s eyes. Inside each eye, add a smaller circle for the pupils. Be sure to leave some empty space among the pupils to make them look more alive.

  1. Add a nose and mouth

Below the eyes, draw a small oval for the nose in the center of the vertical line. From the bottom of the nose, draw a short, curved line down for the mouth, adding small curves on either side to create a smile expression.

  1. Draw the ears

On top of the head oval, draw two semicircles for the panda’s ears. They should be fluffy and slightly rounded. You can also add some texture by lightly drawing in the fur details on the inside of the ears.

  1. Define the body

Now focus on the panda’s body. From the bottom of the head oval, extend two curved lines down to form the body. Make the body a little wider at the bottom to make the panda look plump.

  1. Add arms and legs

Draw two short arms running along the sides of the oval body. For the legs, draw two rounded shapes at the bottom of the body. You can space them slightly apart to make the panda feel relaxed.

  1. Specify features

Go back to the facial features and refine them. Darken the contours of the eyes, nose and mouth. You can also add small curved lines above the eyes as eyebrows to give the panda more character.

  1. Complete your drawing

Once you’re happy with your panda sketch, outline the lines with a darker pencil or ink to make them stand out. Erase all unnecessary guidelines and stray pencil marks.

  1. Add color

If you are using colored pencils or markers, it’s time to color the panda. Paint the ears, around the eyes and nose black. Leave the face, body and limbs white and add a light gray or very light green to give the shadow depth.
