Woman who slipped into waterfall gorge rescued after 12-hour operation – ThePrint – PTIFeed

Tumakuru (Karnataka), Oct 28 (PTI) A young woman, who got stuck in a rocky area above a lake near Mandaragiri hills in the district while taking a selfie, miraculously survived on Monday, police said.

Police and firefighters pulled her out safely after a 12-hour rescue operation.

Hamsa (19), a BTech student from Shivarampur village in Gubbi taluk, had gone with her friend from Bengaluru on Sunday to see the Mandaragiri Hill waterfall, which had come alive due to heavy rains in the last few days, police said.

“Water pours from a 30-foot-high chasm and passes through rocky terrain to fall into Maidala Lake,” they added. “While taking a selfie at the foot of Mandaragiri, she slipped into a gorge and became trapped between the rocks,” a police officer said.

After seeing her disappear into the ravine, her friend raised the alarm and called for help, police said.

Soon the villagers gathered there and called the police. A police team along with fire and emergency services personnel reached the spot and after 12 hours of training, rescued Hamsa.

Tumakuru Superintendent of Police Ashok K.V. told reporters that police and firefighters diverted the gushing water with sandbags and carried out a rescue operation.

“She wasn’t visible all night. After the flow of water stopped, Hamsa was found alive between the rocks. She was taken to the hospital, where she was given first aid. Her condition is now stable in the hospital,” Ashok said.

The SP said that people were prohibited from going there to avoid such incidents and urged them to be careful. PTI GMS RS RS
