Road projects: Stop smear campaign against Umahi – Ohanaeze warns Autumn spokesman

Apex Igbo socio-cultural organisation, Ohanaeze Ndigbo, has warned Member of the House of Representatives, Honorable Remi Oseni, to desist from engaging in a smear campaign against the Minister of Labour, Engr David Umahi, over the alleged deplorable state of the country’s federal roads.

Ohanaeze expressed dismay at the recent unfounded allegations against the Minister of Labor by the House of Representatives.

Remi, who represents Ibarapa East/Ido Federal Constituency of Oyo State, during a House of Representatives committee hearing on Thursday, said Umahi had failed to effectively address the widespread problem of deteriorating roads across the country.

Responding to the allegations, the Secretary General of the Ohanaeze faction, Okechukwu Isiguzoro, in a statement on Monday said such allegations were not only erroneous but also a blatant mischaracterization of the minister’s assiduous efforts in infrastructure development.

The Igbo body said it is pertinent to note that these claims, formulated without due diligence and without regard to substantial evidence, amount to mere propaganda and irresponsible legislative discourse.

He noted that the Hon. Autumn’s remarks reflect a troubling trend that seeks to undermine the commendable work being done by Engr. Umahi.

The statement read in part: “Such claims, unsupported by facts, not only mislead the public, but also distract from the significant progress being made in improving road infrastructure across Nigeria.

“Senator Umahi inherited a vast legacy of infrastructure neglect from previous administrations, characterized by many unrealized road projects and dilapidated roads.

“Despite these legacy challenges and financial resource constraints, he has demonstrated remarkable determination and professionalism in addressing the country’s road problems.

“His track record of achievement in the rehabilitation of critical roads demonstrates his unwavering commitment to serving the Nigerian people.

“Ohanaeze Ndigbo makes a heartfelt appeal to the Hon. Oseni, who represents Ibarapa/Ido Federal Constituency in Oyo State, to rise above baseless allegations and engage in constructive dialogue aimed at strengthening mutual understanding.

“We implore him to conduct an on-the-spot assessment of the minister’s initiatives across the country, which will enable him to gain first-hand knowledge of the massive measures being taken to restore the integrity of Nigeria’s road networks.

“Such a visit will not only enlighten Hon. Autumn, but will also serve as evidence of the focused efforts that have been given priority to solving the country’s infrastructure problems.

“It is important to recognize that Senator Umahi was not deterred by the barrage of unfounded criticism or the noise of discontent.

“His recent endeavors, including the closure of the Lagos-Sokoto Superhighway and Lagos-Calabar Coastal Road projects, are profound indicators of his commitment to delivering on his infrastructure promises.

“These projects must be completed within the stipulated time frame: the first phase of the Lagos-Sokoto Superhighway is expected to be completed before 2027, while the major components of the Lagos-Calabar Coastal Road are expected to be completed by 2025.

“Ohanaeze Ndigbo commends the organization to President Tinubu for retaining Senator Umahi in his crucial role as Minister of Labour.

“This decision represents a significant step in ensuring that the South East and indeed the whole of Nigeria benefits from good governance and sustainable infrastructure development. Ohanaeze Ndigbo is unequivocally opposed to any further attempts to undermine the integrity and effectiveness of Senator Umahi.

“We reiterate our position that such unfounded attacks will not be tolerated. The commitment and professionalism demonstrated by Senator Umahi as a certified and practicing engineer is commendable.

“The people of Nigeria, especially the Igbo people, are confident that under his leadership, a strategic revitalization of roads will be achieved – not limited to just high-profile projects, but encompassing various other important roads.

“In light of these sentiments, we urge the House of Representatives to approach the debate in a spirit of respect and cooperation.

“Using proper legislative channels to address complaints is important; resorting to personal attacks and unfounded criticism only undermines the foundations of constructive interaction.

“We call on all parties involved to focus on real solutions and joint efforts for the benefit of the Nigerian people, rather than engaging in divisive rhetoric.”
