Man accused of shooting at deputies pleads not guilty in Wood County

WISCONSIN RAPIDS, Wis. (WSAW) – A 40-year-old Wisconsin Rapids man accused of shooting at officers during a traffic stop in Wisconsin Rapids has pleaded not guilty.

Clinton Mayotte is charged with eight counts, including first counts of attempted first-degree premeditated murder.

Investigators said officers attempted to locate him in the early morning hours of Aug. 20 after he left the scene of a domestic incident. He was eventually spotted by deputies in neighboring Portage County. Investigators said he did not stop when officers tried to stop him. He is accused of firing a firearm and hitting patrol cars. None of the officers were injured.

His vehicle was disabled near 8th Street and East Grand Avenue in Wisconsin Rapids, according to the initial press release. Investigators said he continued shooting at officers and fled the scene. Some time later, he was discovered by a drone on a roof in the area of ​​9th and Grape Streets. Investigators said he fired at officers while on the roof. The police returned fire, he was detained and taken to the hospital.

Several law enforcement agencies were involved in the investigation of the incident. Includes Portage and Wood County Sheriff’s Office, Grand Rapids, Nekoosa, Stevens Point and Marshfield Police Department.

The investigation is being handled by the Criminal Investigation Department.

He remains in custody on $2.11 million bail. He faces additional charges in Portage County.

The clergy is scheduled to appear in court on Jan. 28 in Wood County.
