A North Carolina man came across a $20 bill and decided to use it to buy a scratch-off lottery ticket—and it paid off.

Jerry Hicks, a master carpenter from Banner Elk, North Carolina, won $1 million after purchasing an Extreme Cash scratch card on Oct. 22, according to press release from the North Carolina Education Lottery.

The lucky guy said that he noticed the $20 by accident.

“I found $20 in the parking lot near the speedway,” he shared. “I used it to buy a ticket.”

In another fateful moment, he walked into a store in Boone and learned that the original lottery ticket he wanted was out of stock.

“They didn’t actually have the ticket I was looking for, so I bought that instead,” he said of the Extreme Cash drawing. An unexpected turn of events led to him buying the winning ticket for $1 million.

He turned in his ticket at North Carolina Lottery headquarters on Oct. 25 and was given several options to receive the cash prize, according to a news release. He was told he could either receive $50,000 annually for 20 years or take $600,000 up front.

He chose the latter, which is $429,007 after state and federal taxes.

So what does he plan to do with the money?

“We’re going to go straight to the Golden Corral and eat everything they have,” Hicks said.

As for his long-term plans, Hicks shared that he wants to retire after 56 years as a carpenter and use the money to support his children.
