Mom mourns daughter who died in accident weeks after engagement (Exclusive)

The mother of a woman who was one of five people killed in a two-vehicle crash in Texas over the weekend says her daughter recently got engaged to her fiancé, who was injured in the collision but survived.

Chelsea Cook, 33, died in the crash on Sunday, Oct. 27, which occurred in the 3000 block of Northwest Loop 820 Freeway around 3:30 a.m. local time, according to a Fort Worth Police Department press release shared with PEOPLE.

Laurel Summerfield told PEOPLE that before the crash, her daughter’s 34-year-old fiancé Evan was playing a concert with his band.

“When the show ended, Evan’s job every time was to take a small trailer and take all the band’s equipment back to the rehearsal space,” Summerfield says. At the time of the crash, she said, they were already “on their way home” and only a mile from the exit.

In a statement, police said they believed “a vehicle traveling in the wrong direction… collided with another vehicle, causing the vehicle to catch fire and become pinched.”

According to police, a family of four – a married couple and their two children – were in a car traveling in the wrong direction. Fort Worth Star Telegram, ABC Branch WFAACBS affiliate KTVT and Fox affiliate KDFV.

“The car was right in front of me. She was almost invisible because there was a lot of fire. She was engulfed in flames,” a witness told WFAA. “I saw all these first responders walking around and grabbing crowbars and grabbing defibrillators and coming back with this look on their faces like they knew it was too late.”

The crash remains under investigation.

Summerfield told PEOPLE that authorities notified them of what happened several hours after the incident. As for Evan, she says he remains hospitalized in the intensive care unit due to his injuries.

The couple, both from Fort Worth, got engaged about three weeks ago, Summerfield said.

“They came (to our house) to pick up their dogs after they left on a trip and left,” she recalls. “Suddenly our front door burst open and Evan came running through the door. He said: “I forgot.” my wallet! Really, can I get your blessing to ask her to marry me? ”

“We said, sure,” Summerfield adds, saying that Evan, who works as a project manager for a pest control company, ended up popping the question during a trip to Albuquerque.

Summerfield says her daughter’s “mission in life” was to “raise people,” especially people she felt “didn’t have confidence in themselves.”

When asked how she would like her daughter, a travel agent, to be remembered, she pointed to a comment a loved one made about her daughter on social media.

“I think the most beautiful thing about Chelsea was her ability to show love to others who were unwilling to show love to themselves,” she wrote. Ryan Callahan. “She showed great love to countless people and helped many others when they needed her most.”
