Marc Maron calls right-wing comics “the public face of a fascist political movement”

Comedian and “WTF the Podcast” host Marc Maron criticized conservative comedians Monday night following Tony Hinchcliffe’s performance. racist comment at Donald Trump’s rally at Madison Square Garden on Sunday.

“The anti-woke flank of the new fascism is driven almost exclusively by comedians, my peers. It doesn’t matter whether they are self-serving or truly believe in the new fascism. They belong to the movement,” Maron wrote in a lengthy post published on the website. his website.

“I don’t do political shows, but I am very political. Innately. I’m keeping up. I’ve read too much clickbait. I oscillate between almost uncontrollable fear and not even hope, but simply a fantasy of a result that will guarantee cultural progress and freedom of spirit for everyone,” Maron began his article.

Although his own show is not political, he added, “an American fascist movement based half on grievance, half on Jesus and supported by tech oligarchs and a flood of propaganda from many sources” is “brewing” in the United States.

“Well, it completely ingrained itself in each of us,” Maron continued. “It’s shameless and proud. Culturally, the combination of blatant racist fear-mongering and anti-woke activism sent a message for the future. A future in which almost all voices are marginalized.”

On Sunday, Hinchcliffe told an audience of Trump supporters: “I don’t know if you know this, but there’s literally a floating island of trash in the middle of the ocean right now? Yeah, I think it’s called Puerto Rico.”

He also said, “And these Latinos love having babies too. Just know this. They do. They do. There is no pulling. They don’t. They go inside. Just like they did to our country.”

Maron’s colleagues, he says, run this “anti-woke flank of the new fascism.”

“It doesn’t matter if they consider themselves helpers or just comics,” he said. “It doesn’t matter whether they are motivated by the idea that what they are fighting for is a matter of free speech, or whether they are truly morally bankrupt racists. They are part of the public face of a fascist political movement that seeks to destroy the democratic idea.”

Comedians who host podcasts and invite “shameless, self-proclaimed white supremacists and fascists” to their shows are giving credence to fascism, Maron added. “When someone uses their platform for this reason, they are promoting anti-American sentiment and promoting a brutal autocracy.”

“Perhaps this is all self-serving. Greedy influencers, comedians, public figures and, of course, tech companies want to join an unapologetic right-wing movement that doesn’t care about regulation, law, justice, decency or democracy in order to increase their profits and put them in power.”

Maron is “trying to stay realistic, live my life and do things that hold back the existential crisis that all of this seems to be causing in me,” he continued. “Try to realize that you don’t have to destroy yourself in the face of cultural destruction. Hold on to who you are and try not to be afraid to live your truth in the midst of an avalanche of toxic bulls.”

Hinchcliffe’s performance created a sensation protest from Puerto Rican political leaders and celebrities, as well as celebrities of Puerto Rican descent. Bad Bunny shared a video of Kamala Harris talking to Puerto Ricans; Jennifer Lopez shared the same video, as well as several others. Ricky Martin shared Hinchcliffe’s comment and wrote: “That’s what they think of us.”

Earlier Sunday, Harris candidate Walz and Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, whose family is Puerto Rican, said they were shocked by the video posted on social media. “What’s so confusing – and I wish more people understood this – is that what they’re doing in Puerto Rico is a testing ground for the policies and the horrors that they want to pursue and that they’re actually unleashing on communities working class. across the United States,” Ocasio-Cortez said.

“And I need people to understand that when they have some asshole calling Puerto Rico floating trash, know that that’s what they think of you,” she added. “So, like, that’s exactly what they think of you. This is how they think about those who earn less than them.”

AOC said she hopes “everyone in Philadelphia” sees the clip.
